Future use of the Coorparoo Bowls Club

Message from the President

In early June, we ran a jam at Norman Park Community and Sports Club to test it out as a replacement for Coorparoo Bowls Club.  It was a successful night, and the committee has made the decision that from 5 August the jam on the first Wednesday of each month will be held at Norman Park.

The Norman Park club ticks all the boxes we want from a venue – easy parking, easy access (no stairs), bistro, air conditioning, room to host over 100 people, enough space to run a World Ukulele Day festival and more.  We will be working with the management to resolve a few issues and set up a commercial arrangement. 

The Coorparoo jam on 1 July will be the last one.  In the history of BUMS, this is the end of an era.  When BUMS started in 2010, Coorparoo was the first permanent venue we used, and we’ve held jams there ever since, as well as workshops, cabarets, trivia nights, AGMs and more. 

The jam has been coordinated by some significant names in BUMS – Milton Scully, Michael Willimott, David Hethorn, John Henderson, and Ian Philips.  The most significant contributor to the jam has been Max Borchardt.  He and his trusty right-hand support Karen have been running the jam for eight years. Max and Karen have decided the move to Norman Park is a good opportunity to step down from running the jam. 

On behalf of all BUMS, past and present, I congratulate Max and Karen on an amazing contribution to BUMS.  I encourage as many BUMS members as possible to come to the last jam 

From August, the first Wednesday of the month will be the Norman Park jam.  Adrian Board has agreed to be the coordinator with Blair Marks, Lori Kibelkstis, Geoff Dancer and others.  It's the start of a new era.  Come and give it a try.
