Review of an Elegant Afternoon at New Farm Bowlo
22nd June 2025
By Peter Grace
The New Farm Bowls Club was an excellent venue on Saturday 21 June for an afternoon of ukulele performances to a good crowd of BUMS and other visitors. There wasn’t much tea drunk or elegance on show, but the music was fabulous.
Sally Carter, ukulele and violin player extraordinaire got the show off with a bang. She wowed us with Classical Gas and Hound Dog (with flourishes Elvis didn’t do). She sang some of her own compositions about her family in Two Girls and breaking up in an emotional song called Pour It Over You.
And she played the violin so fast she was a blur like in the picture.
The Wild Women of Anywhere Beach (Cathy Welsford and Angie Smith) joined with Trish and Connie from the Jam Tarts. Their eclectic set covered everything from jazz (Ain’t Misbehaving and Take 5) to their own songs. Some were anthems encouraging social change like Fence off the Highway (cutting roadkill) and prevent animal extinction. Their lyrics are so clever and so tricky to sing!
The local band from Brisbane, Mama JuJu and the Jam Tarts, finished off an elegant afternoon and got the dancers off their chairs. Julie Minto led the band on ukulele and guitar ably supported by Trish Rodwell on percussion, Connie Di Dato on bass and Vicky McDonald on flute and keytar (mind you they are all adept at swapping instruments). All the band joined in the vocals on songs by Abba, Tina Turner and the Bangles to name a few.
It was a most enjoyable afternoon.
