World Ukulele Day Raffle

On World Ukulele Day (2 February 2025) we launched a raffle with a handmade ukulele as the prize.  We had meant to draw the raffle winner in March, but Cyclone Alfred intervened.  It was drawn at the Coorparoo jam on 2 April, and the winner was ALISON ROLLO.  She couldn't wait for a formal presentation and hurried from Eatons Hill to Toowong to collect it.

President, Sylvia Hunt, presented the ukulele (for the cameras) at the Ferny Grove on 16 April.  Thank you to all the people who bought tickets in the raffle.

The ukulele was made by Ken Carter, a BUMS member since 2013 and an active player in NUMB BUMS.  He now plays in CHUMS, a band based in a retirement village in Aspley He made ukuleles for pleasure and when he downsized his home, he donated some of the ukuleles to BUMS.  Thanks, Ken.

Ukulele Friday Report

On Friday the 11th of April a happy gathering of some 23 ukesters celebrated joining Brisbane Ukulele Musicians Society with a Jam run by Corinda local ukulele royalty, sisters Gabi Liddle, and Jen Reynolds, along with Jen’s talented sons Sam and Ayden Reynolds.

Those in attendance enjoyed a delightful selection of songs from Taylor Swift, Marty Robbins, Train the Steeldrivers, and others. The evening was eventful because it was the first time Ukulele Friday played as a BUMS Jam at the Corinda Bowlo, and it was the first  time that they played in the Bar Annex in the Corinda Bowls club.

It was a very enjoyable evening. The venue is roomy enough to accommodate up to 35 jammers. On the evening in question, BUMS put on a small table of cocktail nibbles as part of the celebration. The Bar is conveniently adjacent to the Annex, and there are food trucks that provide an eclectic menu of tasty snacks.  The fun night ended happily, at 8:00 with the jammers leaving Corinda Bowlo with a broad smile on their faces.
