Ferny Grove jam on a high
22nd April 2025
By Judi Goldspink
It was a very busy night at Ferny Grove on the third Wednesday of the month with about 60 ukers enjoying the fun.
As usual, Donna led a merry band of beginners from 6pm to 7pm.
The jam began in earnest at 7pm with Linda and Kevin leading a great first set. ‘The Weight’, a song by ‘The Band’ threw us in the deep end early with some very challenging chords.
During the first break, President Sylvia presented Alison Rollo with the beautiful ukulele that she won in the World Ukulele Day raffle. This ukulele was handmade by former NUMB BUMS regular, Ken Carter. Alison was thrilled to win such a beautiful instrument. Thanks to all the people who bought a ticket in the raffle.
Donna and Kev entertained us with an open mic, singing two songs, ‘Hound Dog’ and ‘Little Ole Wine Drinker Me’. Unfortunately, we were missing Derek tonight, who was unwell. Hope you are feeling better, Derek!
The second set saw the debut of our new up and coming star bass player, Edwyn. Kev has been showing Edwyn the ropes for a few months now, and Edwyn did a fantastic job. It was also great to see Kev step to the front of the stage, playing Baritone and doing some more singing. Songs in the second set included ‘Brown Eyed Girl’, ‘Dream Lover’, ‘Una Paloma Blanca’ and Kev did a great job singing ‘Me and Bobby McGee’.
The evening raced on with the third set, beginning with a favourite, ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’, moving on through Rod Stewart’s ‘You’re in my Heart’, ‘Yesterday once more’ by the Carpenters and finishing with Suspicious Minds’ by Elvis Presley.
We can’t wait for the next Ferny Grove jam on 21 May!
