Jingle BUMS at Coorparoo
5th December 2024
By Peter Grace
The annual end-of-year bash at Coorparoo Bows Club was a roaring success as we celebrated the last jam there for 2024 with high Christmas spirit. Max our MC led the evening and was first set leader for the night. He and Mrs Claus (aka President Sylvia) were on hand to give out free T shirts and tote bags (surplus stock from the Planetarium gig in 2023).
There were eight set leaders, and the skills of Blair were tested to get performers off the stage and the next performers up and running. The Christmas theme was carried through the night. Some songs were traditional for the time of year, but others were suitably ‘tongue in cheek’. We had songs about:
- tragic reindeer accidents
- a drummer keeping a small boy awake
- monsters like Dracula, zombies and the Wolfman
- an ode to a cat
- missing teeth
- air conditioning
- Hippos
- Gravy
- a very ambitious list of presents for Santa
Do you know these songs?
The set leaders were as follows.
Max Borchardt
One of his songs was Grandma got run over by a reindeer.
The Management Committee (a first for them as a group).
Max, Julie, Peter Orford, Sylvia (aka Mrs Claus) and Peter Grace.
One of their songs was Little Drummer Boy
Spare Parts
Diane, David, Peter and Len
They sang Monster's Christmas Day (an adaption of a Buck Owen's song)
Snowmen at Work
Amanda, Tammy and Simon
Their set included Merry Christmas to my cat
Blair Marks
(Sorry Blair, my photographer let me down)
Blair's songs were All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth and I want a hippopotamus for Christmas.
The Original Crew
Charmaine, Dennis, Anne, Catherine, Chan and Denise
In their Christmas medley, they had a great adaption of Let it Snow called Let it Flow - attuned to Christmas in a hot climate.
Andrew Hunt and Simon
Andrew sang Paul Kelly's How to Make Gravy
Lickety Splitz
Julie, Salli Geoff and Kevin
Santa Baby was the highlight of their set, with Julie nailing her Eartha Kitt vocal and Salli jazzing it up on clarinet.
Jams bring such joy to performers and audiences. How about these images from the jam? Looks like joy to me.
Thanks to all the organisers and volunteers who put the night together (not forgetting Adrian who planned the event and was away on the night).
