New vocal workshop with Elizabeth Ross
Workshop Description
This vocal workshop will be led by Elizabeth Ross. Many will remember her cello playing in the duo Gollagher Ross. She has run popular vocal coaching workshops at the Sunshine Coast Ukulele festival, SPRUKE 2023 and for BUMS.
Session 1 – 12.30pm to 2.00pm
Session 2 – 2.30pm to 4.00pm
The doors will close at 12.30pm and latecomers will not be admitted. Arrive 15 minutes before the start time to register attendance, find a seat and settle in.
The workshop will cost $50 with a $10 discount for current financial members (plus a small Member Jungle processing fee). When buying a ticket, remember to log in to the website if you are a member to ensure you get the 'member's price'. Non-members will not qualify for the discount - why not join BUMS and reap an immediate benefit?
In the first session, Elizabeth will be covering:
Breath work and Ear Training.
In this workshop we will look at simple exercises to help sustain your voice and pitch.
If your voice becomes hoarse or raspy, feels raw, achy or strained, it may be due to lack of diaphragmatic breathing and “forcing” the voice into place. Practising diaphragmatic breathing will support and enhance your vocal range and Elizabeth has a few simple exercises to help find your breath support.
She will also look at the importance of Ear Training, which improves pitch matching, tonic recognition, short-term musical memory and strengthening your current skills with simple, fun exercises and songs to improve your vocal health by developing your “inner ear”.
In the second session, she will be covering:
Reworking a song to suit your voice and style.
This is all about the interpretation of a song. It’s translating the emotions, imagery and meaning of a musical composition. Most importantly, it is implementing your own ideas as to how a piece works for you!
Change the key? Sure! Change the tempo? Yes! Turn it into a Country and Western style? Why Not!
It is all about making the song work for you.
This workshop will be bravely taking musical risks and challenging ourselves to try something different with musical choice to suit you!
To get the most from the workshop, bring a song of your choice as well as your ukes.
